 Before gaining national acclaim for his chili, Wick Fowler served his country as a war correspondent for The Dallas Morning News. Wick witnessed some of the most historic events of World War II, such as the Battle of the Bulge, the bombing of Hiroshima and the Japanese surrender.
In fact, this talented Texan was a jack-of-all-trades. Prior to the war, he served in the merchant marines and worked as a Texas highway patrolman and detective. He later designed sailboats and was an aide to the governor of Texas and to a U.S. senator. When he resumed his correspondent role reporting on the war in Vietnam, he brought along his chili packets to distribute among the troops. It earned him the nickname Chili Cong.
Wick assembled his chili packets as gifts for friends in 1964 and before long, local retailers were putting in orders. Thus, he launched Caliente Chili Co. One story details how Wick managed production assisted by a team of women who packaged the chili spices with cellophane and sealed them with a clothes iron.
Wick Fowler's extraordinary life was cut short by Lou Gehrig's disease in 1972. The Caliente Chili Co. has continued to grow and prosper under the management of family members and was acquired in 1991 by Reily Foods Company.
The Wick Fowler tradition of Texas-style chili continues each year in Terlingua, Texas. The event has been renamed in honor of its founders.
