Born in 1938 the son of a Sint-Niklaas baker, Guy Foubert developed his skills at the Antwerp School of Confectionery and Patisserie. His great talent for making pralines was soon noticed. At that time Guy Foubert was already selling hand-made truffles on the local market.
The story of Chocolaterie Guylian began in 1960 with the marriage of Guy Foubert to Liliane. Hence the name 'Guylian', created by combining the first names of the bride and groom (Guy and Liliane). At that time Guy and Liliane Foubert had a small production kitchen in their home in Sint-Niklaas, producing pralines and truffles which they sold to the local chocolate shops.
Things went well, but it was mainly during the winter months that the pralines and truffles were popular. So Guy and Liliane were constantly on the lookout for something else to make for other times of the year.
The idea of chocolate sea shells occurred by developing this traditional gift made locally by the patissier at the Belgian seaside. Guylian developed their own unique collection of chocolate sea shells shapes and began offering them for sale throughout Belgium and the neighbouring countries.
Guy Foubert was the first to introduce modern technology to a cottage industry. He succeeded in producing Chocolate Sea Shells in large quantities without changing any details of his original recipe from the 1950's. Following the success of the Guylian Sea Shells, Guylian offers today a complete range of premium gift boxes, individually wrapped chocolates and bars. All are made of the finest Belgian chocolate with the same attention to detail in the original creation of Guy Foubert in 1960.
