Known especially for its soups, the world famous, Old Original Bookbinder's Restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, has been serving up traditional favorites since 1865. Dine at Old Original Bookbinder's and there's a chance that you'll sit in the chair once occupied by Diamond Jim Brady, or that of the guest of honor at another dinner, Lillian Russell. You may be served at a table once taken by Tennessee Williams, Irving Berlin, Babe Ruth, Teddy Roosevelt, Al Jolson, Elizabeth Taylor, or Frank Sinatra.
In 1935, the restaurant was purchased by John Taxin, a dynamic man whose energy, personal magnetism, and business savvy preserved Old Original Bookbinder's as it is today. John's daughter and grandson carry on their family tradition of fine food and service. They welcome you to wander around and enjoy the fascinating history of one of America's oldest continuous seafood restaurants.
Notice the cobblestones at the Raw Bar ... they are the original cobbles from Walnut Street, worn down by the feet of Continental and British armies. The ship's wheel at the entrance came from a molasses schooner that plied the seas at the turn of the century. Have a seat at the beautiful mahogany bar, brought in from a saloon in Elko, Nevada.
